  • I enjoyed my visit to the Ventura Center for Spiritual Living. I went there for the Sunday service, the talk was given by Ven. Kusala Bhikshu on "Happiness in Buddhism". It was a great talk. The members are very friendly and loving.

I recently had a dispute with the center that was never resolved. The office lied to me about the high cost for hosting Byron Katie on Aug. 29, 2015 and outrightly stated: "The fee we are charging is based on an agreement we have with Byron Katie." When I asked Byron Katie's office about the cost of the event, their response was: "Ventura Center for Spiritual Living is hosting the event and Katie has been invited to speak, so it is really up to them to determine and manage costs for the event. I do recall you mentioned something along the lines of the Center saying otherwise, but the cost really has nothing to do with Katie or BKI." The amount of $45 was exorbitant for this event and certainly not worth it in my opinion. Even worse is the fact that the book she was promoting, "Loving What Is," states in the introduction in the copy I purchased (pg. xiii) that BK "never charges for attendance" at events! What is the absolute worst, however, is being deceived by a center that calls itself "spiritual." Shameful!

My wife and I moved onto this street not too long ago, and although we are not religious, were pleased to have a socially progressive church in the area.

However, the congregation of this church basically take over our street on a daily basis with total disregard for the people that actually live here. Recently my car was so boxed in that I couldn't move it and I missed a doctor appointment at 1:00 in the afternoon on a week day. I've talked to our neighbors and many have had similar experiences.

I'm sure there are some nice people that go to this church but our experiences have mainly been negative, which is too bad.

  • I love my Center! It is truly an amazing place where everyone is welcome and so much loving kindness is shared. There are many special events and concerts with lots of classes offered, as well. They are minutes from downtown and minutes from the beach, too. As with most places in mid and downtown, there are homeless people migrating through the neighborhood on a semi-regular basis but there's not much they can do about that except redirect them to the various resources available to them, which I know they do. Anyway, I just wanted to add my two cents. :-)
